Shiatsu Massage Therapy.

In brief the benefits of shiatsu include relaxation of both muscular and emotional tension. Also the release of feel good endorphins by stimulating the acupuncture 'energy' points.

Shiatsu is a Japanese massage where direct pressure is applied through clothes using a combination of thumbs, fingers, palms, forearms, and elbows. Stretches and rotations are used to relieve stiff joints and muscles and postural problems. Acupuncture 'energy' points are activated but without needles. Instead finger and thumb pressure is applied to certain points targeted to alleviate specific physical tension or symptoms.

Energy is moved around the body and can be brought into an area which is depleted using holding techniques. Energy is also dispersed when 'stuck' in one part of the body, e.g. to allow movement of the neck in all directions when previously range of movement was restricted due to sleeping awkwardly.

Shiatsu originated in Japan in the 1920's and draws on a long history and tradition of Oriental medicine including the Five Elements, which consist of wood, water, fire, metal and earth. The natural patterns or cycles of the body's physiology are thought to mirror the seasons of winter, spring, early and late summer and autumn.

The energetic activity of each of the twelve meridians which can be traced on the body, are said to be reflected by the five elements in different ways for different people. The energy in the meridians is dependent on a person's physiology and personality, which can be categorised into one or more of the five elements at different times in one's lifetime.

Human qualities are thought to be mirrored in our natural environment. In Oriental medicine there is a belief that illness and stress result from energy blockages in the body, and that all body organs must work together and function optimally to maintain health. Illness or other deficiency impacting a single organ has a knock on effect throughout the body on both physical and psychological levels.

The aim of shiatsu is to bring the body's energy state into equilibrium, enhancing natural healing processes.

How does shiatsu compare to massage using oil?

Unlike a regular back massage which most people tend to choose, shiatsu can be considered more holistic, to look after our entire health, inside and out. It is a complete body workout from head to toe. You can even feel that your entire spine has been stretched afterwards.

You really have to experience it to believe it. The shiatsu experience is hard to put into words as it is so multi-faceted, feels good in so many ways, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
